Why foster?

Every year, thousands of unadopted cats and dogs, including kittens and puppies, are euthanized in the city shelters. One way to change these numbers is by increasing adoptions. Fostering helps Zani’s Furry Friends save more lives from the city shelters and puts them on the path to adoption.

What is fostering?

Fostering is bringing a furry friend into your home and taking care of her/him until adopted to a furever home.

How long is fostering for?

It varies. Ideally until the furever home comes along; however, sometimes just a very temporary home is needed.

Where and how do you get a foster animal?

Almost all of Zani’s Furry Friends ZFF, inc come from Animal Care & Control of NYC. We can arrange for you to go and choose the cat/dog directly from the shelter with prior notification or we arrange delivery when possible to your home.

Can you foster if you have pets already?

Absolutely and ZFF can assist you with introductions to your other pet(s).

What costs are involved?

Foster parents generally pay for food and litter as we are a non-profit, volunteer organization. We cover medical expenses at our participating veterinarian offices.

Are foster cats and kittens healthy?

Usually, yes; however due to time in the shelter, almost everyone leaves with a kitty/puppy cold which is easily resolved with a 10-day course of antibiotics. ZFF can teach you how to medicate and provides all necessary medication.

How do potential adopters see the foster cat/dog?

ZFF asks for photos and a brief description which we post to our websites. Potential adopters contact us. We screen the adopters for the appropriateness of the home and either arrange for a meet and greet in your home (if you agree) or at our weekly adoption events.

What type of support does ZFF offer fosters?

ZFF has a team of expert volunteers with cat/dog experience who are always available for consultation by phone or email. We also have a Zani’s Furry Friends foster and adopter FB group which you will be invited to join. ZFF works with every foster parent to ensure a positive and rewarding experience.
