If you have fallen in love with a foreign rescue dog, there are a number of things you need to do to prepare yourself. Many dogs from different cultures come from very different circumstances than you would imagine a dog from the US. It will be up to you as the pet guardian to acclimate them to their new life.

Connect with he rescue and find out as much as you can about the dog’s background

  1. Where is the dog from? – If it is from another country, take the time to learn a few basic words like “Hello” “Sit” “Good boy/girl” in that language. Dogs learn new words and phrases quickly but this might just break the ice.
  2. Was this dog a feral?
  3. Was it a family pet that was displaced by a natural disaster?
  4. Was it abused?

Please read on for more information on how to adopt and acclimate your new foreign dog.
